George McGovern was a well-known Democratic politician from Avon, South Dakota. McGovern was most known for being runner-up in the 1972 presidential election, losing to Republician nominee Richard Nixon.
Apart from McGovern’s involvement with politics, McGovern served in the U.S. military during WWII as a 1st Lieutenant, was the author of various books, and served as an ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.
